Squish & Sip is an event that brings together the community to combat the invasive lantern fly population while supporting local businesses. Hosted in downtown Maumee and Toledo, the event would feature local drink vendors, food trucks, and live entertainment to encourage participation and community engagement. The festival will be family- and pet-friendly, welcoming children and dogs to take part in the fun. Leashed dogs are invited to join their owners on the walk. Participants will gather downtown to enjoy refreshments and food from local vendors before breaking into groups to walk through designated areas, identifying and safely removing spotted lantern flies. The event will provide educational materials on the environmental impact of lantern flies and proper removal techniques. The Squish & Sip event would be held once each summer, aligning with the peak seasons for lantern fly activity. The goals of this project are to reduce the spread of lantern flies in Northwest Ohio, educate the community about the importance of protecting native plant life, support local food and drink vendors and create a sense of environmental care. This event benefits local ecosystems, NW Ohio residents, and small businesses by reducing the spread of invasive lanternflies, educating the public, and driving community participation.
